A meditative mind is a state of being, a feeling of inner peace, calmness and connection to the Universe. You can cultivate this state through a variety of different practices. Sitting cross-legged, repeating a mantra, breathing deeply, chanting, and mindfulness meditation are all examples of a meditative state. But even more active forms of meditation like yoga, surfing and running (the runner’s high) can also cultivate this state.
The goal of meditating is to focus your attention and clear your mind. It is common to have random thoughts that come and go during meditation. When they do, you simply observe them without judgment or attachment and allow them to pass by. Over time, this practice allows you to see these thoughts and feelings for what they are. And when you can recognize them for what they are, they lose power over you.
Meditation helps reduce chronic pain and improve sleep by regulating activity in brain regions related to these experiences. It can also help you develop an open attitude towards pain and become more aware of the physical sensations associated with it.
Although meditation has roots in ancient philosophies and several world religions, you don’t have to be religious to meditate. Just find a quiet place, sit comfortably and close your eyes. For beginners, a few minutes of meditation a day is recommended. As you continue to practice, the frequency and duration of your meditative sessions will increase.
